Applications

Medical Devices

Integrating medical device technologies with material deposition technologies is one of the most exciting opportunities in the market today. A wave of products aimed at biological and pharmacological therapies, as well as “smart devices” and multi use medical devices, is anticipated for the foreseeable decades. MicroPen Technologies is at the forefront of this integration of materials and devices.

MicroPenning the outside or inside surface of a medical device enables it to:

Ablate
MicroPenning electrodes to RF ablation probes and catheter balloons. The multi axis capability of the MicroPen® system coupled with the real time, contour tracking capability of the MicroPen® pen tip enable us to pattern with conductive ink on flexible, inflatable and delicate surfaces.
Sense
MicroPenning electrodes to medical devices to sense pressure, temperature and physiological output.  Similar sense electrodes can be MicroPenned on medical balloons, catheters and surgical instruments.

Electrodes are patterned with silver, gold, platinum or nickel thick film material. Pictured is a PVC tube with electrodes patterned with a silver filled polymer.
Deliver Drugs
Pictured is a prototype Nitinol stent that is MicroPenned with a drug eluting polymer. Other MicroPenned materials in similar applications are pharmaceutical compounds that are bio-reagent solutions and saline based compounds.
Seal
MicroPenning seals on glass. Pictured is a glass plate with various sealing patterns. As a package lid, this seal allows generous head room in MEMS optical applications.
Measure
MicroPenning three heating zones to a stainless steel immersion medical heater with an integrated thermistor. Thick film heating applications provide rapid heat transfer, reliable area or spot heating, and economical advantage.
Visualize
MicroPenning radio-opaque material for visualization of medical devices.
Carry Current
MicroPenning is used to apply the heating zone to a stainless steel surgical instrument heater. Pictured is a heater with a feedback thermistor applied by MicroPenning. The multi axis capability of the MicroPen® coupled with the real time contour tracking capability of the MicroPen® pen tip enables three-dimensional surface deposition.
Stimulate
MicroPenning is used to apply electrodes to medical devices. These electrodes are used to stimulate physiological response. Similar electrodes can be MicroPenned on medical balloons, catheters and surgical instruments.
